GUIDE TO FURTHER READING

The study of Roman sarcophagi has long been, primarily, the province of German scholarship, which has produced the basic corpora of the monuments. These form the fundamental series entitled Die antiken Sarkophagreliefs (initiated by Robert 1890 and 1897–1919), as well as the subsequent volumes in the series (including many of the works listed in the bibliography). The Dionysiac sarcophagi appeared as ASR volume IV (Matz 1968–1975) and also independently (Turcan 1966). The basic handbooks are in German (Koch and Sichtermann 1982 and Koch 1993). In English, both Toynbee (1971) and Walker (1985) provide contextualization, and the mythological sarcophagi are treated in Koortbojian (1995), and now Zanker and Ewald (2004/2012). A volume of articles (Elsner and Huskinson 2011) and a special issue of RES: Anthropology and Aesthetics (2012, 61–62), along with two others (Galinier and Baratte 2013, Hallett and Clark forthcoming) offer broad surveys of the field as well as the more recent literature.
